Human reproductive system is as important and crucial as any other systems, dividing into two systems- male and female. Males have one function to carry out is the formation and production of sperms from testis which consists of several ducts and cells working together to coordinate the production and secretion of sperms. Such cells carried out are interstitial cells.

Interstitial cell like any other cell lies in between the spaces of functional cells of a tissue. Part of interstitial cells are Leydig cells which are responsible for the formation of male sex hormones also known as androgens.
As the name suggests, inter- is the spaces between and stitial- cells. Interstitial cells are not only present in male reproductive system but also in other parts of organelles such as- in the stroma of ovary, in some cells of pineal gland and renal interstitial cells.
The function of Interstitial cells in Leydig is connected to the tubules of the testes where it helps in production of the male sex hormones called testosterone. Interstitial cells present in endocrine are connective tissues which surround the seminiferous tubules.
In females, Interstitial cells stimulate a hormone known as Luteinizing Hormone which is also called Interstitial cell stimulating hormone. The production of testosterone by the Interstitial cells is responsible for not only producing sex hormones in males but also in growth of secondary sex characteristics like- body hair, deepening of voice and increasing in muscle tone.
Note:
Other than the interstitial cells, cells which nurture the testicles in males for the storage and formation of sperms are called Sertoli cells. Sertoli cells are considered to be the mother cells for testicles. It is the part of seminiferous tubules helping in the process of spermatogenesis. Interstitial cells produce and support hormones and have a large part in the endocrine system.
