Question: What are fluids? Name two common fluids....
What are fluids? Name two common fluids.
Solution
Fluids basically are the states of matter which can continually flow. So, fluids can be said for the gaseous or liquid state of matter. It is generally rigid in nature and does not have a defined shape. Fluids can be compressible or non-compressible according to their properties. They can be viscous and non-viscous.
Complete answer:
If we define fluids in basic language, then we can say that fluids are the states of matter which can continuously flow. The fluids can be gaseous or liquid states of matter.
Viscosity is a property of a fluid to oppose the flow. So, greater the viscosity, more viscous will be the fluid.
Fluids can be viscous or non-viscous. Viscosity of a fluid is the measure of its thickness. For example: Honey is a very viscous fluid.
Some of the properties of fluids are:
- They are capable of flowing.
- They can easily change their shape as they do not have a definite shape.
- They have a smooth movement (can easily flow).
- Fluids can be compressible or incompressible.
- They can be steady or unsteady in nature.
Two common fluids are water and oil.
Note:
Fluids can be compressible or incompressible. On cooling a fluid, it can be compressed except water. Water cannot be compressed because on cooling, it gets converted into ice and hence, the volume of ice is greater than that of water. So while cooling the water gets expanded. This happens because the density of ice is less than that of water in liquid state.
