Question

Physics Question on mechanical properties of solids

Two wires AA and BB of same material and of equal length with the radii in the ratio 1:21 : 2 are subjected to identical loads. If the length of AA increases by 8mm8\, mm, then the increase in length of BB is

A

2 mm

B

4 mm

C

8 mm

D

16 mm

Answer

2 mm

Explanation

Solution

Given, r1:r2=1:2r_{1}: r_{2}=1: 2 and l1=8l_{1}=8
In the first condition (cross-section area)
A1=πr12A_{1}=\pi r_{1}^{2} ...(i)
In the second condition,
(cross-section area) A2=πr22A_{2}=\pi r_{2}^{2} ...(ii)
On dividing E (i) by E (ii), we get
A1A2=r12I22\frac{A_{1}}{A_{2}}=\frac{r_{1}^{2}}{I_{2}^{2}} or A1A2=(12)2=14\frac{A_{1}}{A_{2}}=\left(\frac{1}{2}\right)^{2}=\frac{1}{4}
Stress 1:_{1}: Stress 2=4:1_{2}=4: 1
Strain 1:_{1}: Strain 2=4:1_{2}=4: 1
l1l2=41\frac{l_{1}}{l_{2}}=\frac{4}{1}
l1=4l2\Rightarrow l_{1}=4 l_{2}
Increase in length of BB,
l2=l1n=82=2mml_{2}=\frac{l_{1}}{n}=\frac{8}{2}=2\, mm
