Question

Mathematics Question on Vectors

Two vectors A=3A = 3 and B=4B = 4 are perpendicular. Resultant of both these vectors is RR. The projection of the vector BB on the vector RR is

A

3.23.2

B

2.42.4

C

55

D

1.251.25

Answer

3.23.2

Explanation

Solution

Here, A=3,B=4| A |=3,| B |=4

Let EOP=ϕ\angle E O P=\phi, then
B=Rcosϕ=4B =R \cos \phi=4 and A=Rsinϕ=3A =R \sin \phi=3
tanϕ=34\therefore \tan \phi=\frac{3}{4}
Now, cosϕ=45\cos \phi=\frac{4}{5}
Projection of BB on OPO P is Bcosϕ| B | \cos \phi
i.e. 4cosϕ=4×45=165=3.2\quad 4 \cos \phi=4 \times \frac{4}{5}=\frac{16}{5}=3.2
