Question

Mathematics Question on Problem on Trains

Two trains, 330 and 110 m long, are going in the same direction. The faster train takes one minute to pass the other completely. If they are moving in opposite directions, they pass each other completely in 3 s. What is the speed of the faster train?

A

42 m/s

B

38 m/s

C

46 m/s

D

50 m/s

Answer

42 m/s

Explanation

Solution

Using the concept of relative velocity:
Total distance-240 m
When going in same direction

240xy=60\frac{240}{x-y}=60

x-y=4
When going in different direction

240xy=3\frac{240}{x-y}=3

x+y=80

On solving the equations we get,

x=42 and y=38 Speed of faster train is 42ms\frac{42m}{s}

and slower one is 38ms\frac{38m}{s}.So the correct option is (A) : .
