Physics Question on cells

Two non-ideal batteries are connected in parallel. Consider the following statements. (i) The equivalent emf is smaller than either of the two emfs. (ii) The equivalent internal resistance is smaller than either of the two internal resistance.

A

Both (i) and (ii) are correct

B

(i) is correct but (ii) is wrong

C

(ii) is correct but (i) is wrong

D

Both (i) and (ii) are wrong

Answer

(ii) is correct but (i) is wrong

Explanation

Solution

Let emf of both cells are E1E_1 and E2E_2 and internal resistances are r1r_1 and r2r_2 . In parallel order, we have E=E1E2\, \, \, \, \, \, E = E_1 - E_2 Effective internal resistance of both cells 1R=1r+1r\frac{1}{R} = \frac{1}{r} + \frac{1}{r} R=r2\Rightarrow R = \frac{r}{2} So, emf is equal to the emf of any of the cell and internal resistance is less then the resistance of any of cell. Hence, (ii) is right and (i) is wrong.
