Physics Question on Electrostatic potential

Two conducting spheres of radii R1R_{1} and R2R_{2} are charged with charges Q1Q_{1} and Q2Q_{2} respectively. On bringing them in contact, there is

A

no change in the energy of the system

B

an increase in the energy of the system if Q1R2Q2R1 Q_{1}R_{2}\ne Q_{2}R_{1}

C

always a decrease in the energy of the system

D

a decrease in the energy of the system if Q1R2=Q2R1Q_{1}R_{2}=Q_{2}R_{1}

Answer

a decrease in the energy of the system if Q1R2=Q2R1Q_{1}R_{2}=Q_{2}R_{1}

Explanation

Solution

Potential V1=14πε0Q1R1V_{1}=\frac{1}{4 \pi \varepsilon_{0}} \frac{Q_{1}}{R_{1}}
and V2=14πε0Q2R2V_{2}=\frac{1}{4 \pi \varepsilon_{0}} \frac{Q_{2}}{R_{2}}
If V1=V2V_{1}=V_{2}
then Q1R1=Q2R2\frac{Q_{1}}{R_{1}}=\frac{Q_{2}}{R_{2}}
or Q1R1=Q2R1Q_{1} R_{1}=Q_{2} R_{1}
In this case, there will be no flow of charges. However, if the given spheres have unequal potentials then the charges shall flow from higher potential to lower potential. Flow of charges shall be accompanied by loss of energy.
