These properties can be similar or dissimilar to classify the organism/materials. When two or more characteristics are found in common in an organism, then they are classified into one group. Not only the physical properties are considered but also chemical properties.
Evolution is a gradual change in an organism over a long period. This may be resulting in the formation of new species from the pre-existing species. It means that they have a common ancestor.
Thus the classification of an organism helps us to map the evolutionary relationship between them. As evolution happens the criteria of the classification also change because the evolution results in new properties in the organisms.
