Question: Trick to remember reactivity series of metals?...
Trick to remember reactivity series of metals?
Solution
The reactivity series is a series which is made in a proper sequence to place the different metals of the periodic table according to their reactivity to participate in any chemical reaction. This remember reactivity series of metals is a helpful tool to predict the reaction behaviour of different elements.
Complete answer:
As we know, metal has a tendency to lose electrons from their outermost shell to obtain stable electronic configuration. Therefore, we predict that if metal is highly reactive according to series it will easily lose electrons to convert into its positive ion.
Periodic table consists of a large number of elements which shows metallic property which is about 95. It is difficult to learn the reactivity order of such a huge number of elements so we create a reactivity series which is basically composed of 26 elements which are important for us.
The basic approach to learn the reactivity series is to break these elements into groups and then use mnemonic for each element.
METAL | SYMBOL | MNEMONIC |
---|---|---|
Potassium | K | Kal |
Sodium | Na | Nana or |
Lithium | Li | Lily |
Barium | Ba | Badi si |
Strontium | Sr | Safari |
Calcium | Ca | Car laay |

Magnesium | Mg | Mongolia |
Aluminium | Al | Aay |
Carbon | C | Camel |
Manganese | Mn | Monkey |
Zinc | Zn | Zebra or |
Chromium | Cr | Crow ki karo |
Iron | Fe | fekar |
METAL | SYMBOL | MNEMONIC |
---|---|---|
Cadmium | Cd | CD |
Cobalt | Co | Co bja ke |
Nickel | Ni | Nikle hm |
Tin | Sn | Sunder |

Note:
The element which is highly reactive according to the reactivity series of metals will quickly undergo chemical reaction as compared to less reactive metals. Elements which are highly reactive in nature should always be placed at the top of the series while metal with lowest reactivity got the lowest place in series.
