Question

Physics Question on Electromagnetic induction

Three resistances P,Q,RP, Q, R each of 2Ω2\, \Omega and an unknown resistance SS form the four arms of a Wheatstone's bridge circuit. When a resistance of 6Ω6\, \Omega is connected in parallel to SS the bridge gets balanced. What is the value of SS ?

A

2Ω2\,\Omega

B

3Ω3\,\Omega

C

6Ω6\,\Omega

D

1Ω1\,\Omega

Answer

3Ω3\,\Omega

Explanation

Solution

The situation can be depicted as shown in figure.

As resistances SS and 6Ω6\, \Omega are in parallel their effective resistance is
6S6+SΩ\frac{6 S}{6+S} \Omega
As the bridge is balanced, hence it is balanced Wheatstone's bridge.
For balancing condition,
PQ=R(6S6+S)\frac{P}{Q}=\frac{R}{\left(\frac{6 S}{6+S}\right)}
or 22=2(6+S)6S\frac{2}{2}=\frac{2(6+S)}{6 S}
or 3S=6+S3 S=6+S
or S=3ΩS=3\, \Omega
