The term “Lipido chondria” was suggested for
(A) Mitochondria
(B) E.R
(C) Golgi complex
(D) Ribosomes

Explanation

Solution

Cells are the basic unit of any organism. The organism could be made of single cell or multiple cells but they all perform as a whole entity. The organelles in the cells are the subunits, which drives the cell and its functions.

Complete answer:
The organelles in prokaryotic and eukaryotic cells vary widely as eukaryotic cells are more complex and organised than prokaryotic cells. Most of the organelles are named after their morphology or depending on the function, they perform. Karl August Möbius, a German zoologist, first used the word organelle. He used the word “organelle” (derived from Latin) for the organs of unicellular cells in comparison with multicellular organisms with different organs. Now let us find the origin of names and their functions for the other organelles given in the question.
Mitochondria – Commonly found in eukaryotic cells, these are popularly called ‘power house of the cell’ as they generate most of the ATP required by the cell. The word originated from Greek in which ‘mitos’ means ‘thread’ and ‘chondria’ means ‘granule’. It is the site of action of ATP production cycles like Krebs cycle. However, they perform other metabolic works like calcium storage, steroid production, immune signalling etc.
Endoplasmic reticulum (ER) – The primary function of ER is protein synthesis and folding. They contain cisternae, which is a membrane-enclosed sac-like flattened structure interconnected with each other. The ‘reticulum’ means network.
Golgi complex – This organelle is named after the scientist, Camillo Golgi, who first identified it. The Golgi complex works to transport the protein in vesicles to its target cells. It processes the proteins with the help of glycosylated enzymes by attaching sugars to the proteins. They were suggested to be called ‘lipido chondria’ as they also store lipids in vacuoles.
Ribosomes – They consist of proteins and RNA which are responsible for the translation of proteins in the cell. Ribosomes can be membrane bound along with ER or free in cytosol.

Thus, the term “Lipido chondria” was suggested for (C) Golgi complex.

Note: Camillo Golgi named the Golgi complex, in 1898, as “apparato reticolare interno” meaning internal reticular apparatus. However, it was unacceptable by some people claiming it to be an optical illusion. After the discovery of modern microscopes, it was proved right. In 1910, the term ‘Golgi apparatus’ was started being used.
