Mathematics Question on Area of a Polygon

The shape of the top surface of a table is a trapezium. Find its area if its parallel sides are 1 m and 1.2 m and perpendicular distance between them is 0.8 m.
Top surface of a trapezium

Answer

Area of trapezium = 12\frac{1}{2} (Sum of parallel sides) ×\times (Distances between parallel sides)
Area of top surface of the table = (12\frac{1}{2})×\times(a+b)h
= (12\frac{1}{2})×\times(1+1.2)0.8
= (12\frac{1}{2})×\times2.2×\times0.8 = 0.88
Area of top surface of the table is 0.88 m2 .
