Question

Chemistry Question on Aldehydes, Ketones and Carboxylic Acids

The reagent used for the separation of acetaldehyde from acetophenone is

A

NaHSO3NaHSO_3

B

C6H5NHNH2C _{6} H _{5} NHNH _{2}

C

NH2OHNH _{2} OH

D

NaOHI2NaOH - I_{2}

Answer

NaHSO3NaHSO_3

Explanation

Solution

Acetaldehyde (CH3CHO)\left( CH _{3} CHO \right) and acetophenone (C6H5COCH3)\left( C _{6} H _{5} COCH _{3}\right) both react with phenyl hydrazine (C6H5NHNH2)\left( C _{6} H _{5} NHNH _{2}\right) and hydroxyl amine ( NH2OHNH _{2} OH ). It also give iodoform test with (NaOHI2)\left( NaOH - I _{2}\right). But acetophenone does not give addition compound with NaHSO3NaHSO _{3} unlike CH3CHOCH _{3} CHO.
