Question

Chemistry Question on Chemical Reactions

The reaction of CHCl3CHC{{l}_{3}} and alcoholic KOHKOH with pp -toluidine gives

A

B

C

D

Answer

Explanation

Solution

Aliphatic and aromatic primary amines on warming with CHCl3CHC{{l}_{3}} and alcoholic KOHKOH form isocyanide or carbylamine which has very unpleasant smell. This reaction is known as carbylamine reaction. Since p-toluidine contains an aromatic primary amine group, it undergoes similar reaction and give 4-methyl phenyl isocyanide.
