The product of photosynthesis is not a protein-state whether the statement is true or false? Justify your answer.

Explanation

Solution

Photosynthesis is a biological process mostly used by green plants, cyanobacteria and few other organisms where light energy is converted into chemical energy that helps in the metabolic activities of the organism.

Complete answer:
Photosynthesis begins when light from the sun is absorbed by reaction center proteins that are present in the green pigment, chlorophyll. In green plants chlorophyll is located on chloroplasts which are present on the surfaces of the leaves whereas for bacteria which lack defined organelles they are present on the bacterial membrane.

After the light is absorbed a series of reactions takes place known to be the light dependent reactions leading to the splitting of water in plants and evolution of oxygen. Along with this, two short term energy storing compounds are produced which are adenosine triphosphate and nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide phosphate.

These two compounds then participate in the light independent reactions where the atmospheric carbon dioxide combines with ribulose bisphosphate and together in the presence of the previous two compounds leads to the production of carbohydrates such as glucose that provide energy to the pants. So the above statement is true, the product of photosynthesis is not a protein instead it is a carbohydrate.

Note: Photosynthesis is an important process and thus needs to be regulated properly. The factors that regulate photosynthesis are- wavelength of the available light, availability of water, suitable temperature and amount of leaf area available for capturing of the light.
