The pressure exerted by liquid on container:
A. Increases with depth
B. Decreases with depth
C. Remains unchanged with depth
D. None of the above
Solution
In order to solve this question, firstly we will understand the concept of pressure and also the pressure exerted by liquid. Then we will compare all the given options to find the required answer.
Complete answer:
Pressure is a physical quantity which is known as the forces applied on the surface of the object's per unit area and also in perpendicular direction. If we deal with the liquids and gases which exert pressure, then the pressure is defined as a measure of the energy per unit volume in terms of work.
Formula for calculation of pressure: P=dgh where d is the density of liquid, gis the gravity of earth and h is the height of liquid in the container.
From the formula it is clear that pressure by the liquid depends upon the density of the liquid, acceleration due to gravity of earth and the height or depth within the liquid. Hence, with increase in the liquid’s height of the static liquid, pressure increases linearly with depth.
Just under the surface of the liquid, the pressure by the liquid is in small range but as we go deeper in the liquid, its range increases. Liquid columns in the container have its weight which exert pressure at the bottom of the container as the column of height of liquid increases.
Therefore, we conclude that the pressure exerted by liquid on a container increases with depth.
Hence, option A is correct.
Note:
While solving this question, we should also know that the liquid also exert pressure on the walls of the vessel in which they are stored. Hence from the above discussion it is clear that greater the depth of the liquid column, greater the pressure it exerts.
