Question
Chemistry Question on Buffer Solutions
The pH of 0.1M solution of the following salts increases in the order :
A
NaCl<NH4Cl<NaCN<HCl
B
HCl<NH4Cl<NaCl<NaCN
C
NaCN<NH4Cl<NaCl<HCl
D
HCl<NaCl<NaCN<NH4Cl
Answer
HCl<NH4Cl<NaCl<NaCN
Explanation
Solution
(i) HCl⟶0.1H++0.1MCl−
∴[H+]=0⋅1M
pH=−log[H+]=−log0⋅1=1
(ii) NaCl is a salt of strong acid and strong base so it is not hydrolysed and hence its pH is 7.
(iii) NH4Cl+H2O⇌NH4OH+HCl
∴ The solution is acidic and its pH is less than that of 0.1MHCl.
(iv) NaCN+H2O⇌NaOH+HCN
∴ The solution is basic and its pH is more than that of 0.1MHCl.
∴ Correct order for increase in pH is
HCl<NH4Cl<NaCl<NaCN.
