Chemistry Question on Buffer Solutions

The pH of 0.1M0.1\, M solution of the following salts increases in the order :

A

NaCl<NH4Cl<NaCN<HClNaCl < NH _{4} Cl < NaCN < HCl

B

HCl<NH4Cl<NaCl<NaCNHCl < NH _{4} Cl < NaCl < NaCN

C

NaCN<NH4Cl<NaCl<HClNaCN < NH _{4} Cl < NaCl < HCl

D

HCl<NaCl<NaCN<NH4ClHCl < NaCl < NaCN < NH _{4} Cl

Answer

HCl<NH4Cl<NaCl<NaCNHCl < NH _{4} Cl < NaCl < NaCN

Explanation

Solution

(i) HClH0.1++Cl0.1MHCl \longrightarrow \underset{0.1}{ H }^{+}+\underset{0.1 M }{ Cl ^{-}}
[H+]=01M\therefore\left[ H ^{+}\right]=0 \cdot 1 M
pH=log[H+]=log01=1pH =-\log \left[ H ^{+}\right]=-\log 0 \cdot 1=1
(ii) NaClNaCl is a salt of strong acid and strong base so it is not hydrolysed and hence its pHpH is 7.7 .
(iii) NH4Cl+H2ONH4OH+HClNH _{4} Cl + H _{2} O \rightleftharpoons NH _{4} OH + HCl
\therefore The solution is acidic and its pHpH is less than that of 0.1MHCl0.1 \,M\, HCl.
(iv) NaCN+H2ONaOH+HCNNaCN + H _{2} O \rightleftharpoons NaOH + HCN
\therefore The solution is basic and its pHpH is more than that of 0.1MHCl0.1 \,M \,HCl.
\therefore Correct order for increase in pHpH is
HCl<NH4Cl<NaCl<NaCNHCl < NH _{4} Cl < NaCl < NaCN.
