The name of Billy Arjan Singh is most closely associated with which among the following National Parks of India?
A. Jim Corbett National Park
B. Dudhwa National Park
C. Panna National Park
D. Rajaji National Park
Solution
Hint:- Kunwar "Billy" Arjan Singh (15 August 1917 to 1 January 2010) was a conservationist and author-turned Indian hunter. He was the first to attempt to reintroduce tigers and leopards into the wild from captivity.
Complete answer:
The first big initiative for Billy Arjan Singh was to save a herd of barasingha in the neighbouring Sathiana range of the Dudhwa forest reserve. In 1976, for his environmental efforts, he won the World Wildlife Fund's gold medal, the WWF 's premier price. He was also largely responsible for convincing Indira Gandhi, the then Prime Minister, to turn Dudhwa into a 200-square-mile national park.
For his reintroduction of leopards and a tiger into the wild of Dudhwa National Park, Singh 's conservation works for wildlife are well known. He began by bringing up the Prince, an orphaned male leopard cub, which he successfully reintroduced into the wild in 1973.
Some tigers that had a Siberian tiger phenotype with a big head, pale pelage, white complexion, and broad stripes were found in the protected area in the 1990s, and were then believed to be Bengal-Siberian tiger hybrids. Billy Arjan Singh sent tiger hair samples from the area to the Hyderabad Centre for Cellular and Molecular Biology, where they were studied using mitochondrial sequence analysis.
Results revealed that the tigers in question had a mitochondrial haplotype of the Bengal tiger suggesting that their mother was a Bengal tiger. For microsatellite research, skin, hair and blood samples from 71 tigers collected in different Indian zoos, in the National Museum in Kolkata and including the two hair samples from Dudhwa National Park were prepared to prove that two tigers had alleles in.
Arjan Singh was highly honoured for his services to conservation. He was awarded the World Wildlife Gold Medal in 1996, and in 1997 he received the Order of the Golden Ark. The Lifetime Award for Tiger Protection was also given to him. In 2004, for his creative contribution to conservation and public consciousness, Arjan Singh won the Getty Prize, administered by the World Wildlife Fund. He was awarded the Yash Bharati award in 2006 and the Padma Bhushan.
So from these discussions we can conclude that Billy Arjan Singh is most closely associated with Dudhwa National Park because of his contribution.
Therefore the correct answer is option (B) Dudhwa National Park.
Note:- Billy Arjan Singh was an insatiable hunter in his prime. One day, though, after he had shot a young leopard in the lights of his car, he changed his opinion of hunting drastically, experiencing nothing but revulsion for killing and vowing that he would follow the cause of survival from then on.
