The Mond process is used for the:
(A) Extraction of Mo
(B) Purification of Ni
(C) Purification of Zr and Ti
(D) Extraction of Zn
Solution
Hint- In this process metal should be capable of forming volatile compounds with available reagent and the volatile compound formed should be readily decomposable.
Complete answer:
The Mond process involves three reaction stages. Nickel usually comes with other impurities, in the form of nickel oxide. In stage 1, the nickel is replaced with syngas, which is a combination of hydrogen gas and carbon monoxide gas. With hydrogen gas, the nickel oxide and impurities react to form an impure solid nickel:
Afterwards, the carbon monoxide reacts with the impure nickel. But with the carbon monoxide only nickel will react readily-the other metals will not. Nickel and carbon monoxide react to form carbonyl nickel gas, but the impurities remain solid.
Ni(s)+4CO(g)→Ni(CO)4(g)
Eventually, nickel carbonyl gas is heated to decompose the nickel carbonyl into pure nickel and carbon monoxide.
Ni(CO)4(g)→Ni(s)++4CO(g)
The carbon monoxide is then recycled and the nickel is collected.
Hence, from the above process it is clear that the Mond’s process is used for the extraction of nickel.
Hence, the correct option is B.
Note- Some of the uses of nickel are; the production of nickel is used for alloying elements, coates, batteries and other applications, such as kitchen articles, mobile phone, medical appliances, transportation, buildings, electricity generation and jewelry. Nickel is the main cause of ferronickel production in stainless steel.
