Leydig cells, also known as interstitial cells, are found in the connective tissue present between the seminiferous tubule and a small group of rounded interstitial cells. These are present in small compartments known as testicular lobules. The function of Leydig cells is to produce testosterone (male sex hormones) in the presence of the luteinizing hormone(LH). It may be associated with FSH(follicular stimulating hormone) or LH in function as FSH promotes the production of sperm in seminiferous tubules. They release a class of hormones called androgens including testosterone, androstenedione, and they are stimulated by pituitary hormone and luteinizing hormone.
LH in males is sometimes given the name of interstitial cell-stimulating hormone (ICSH) because it controls the production of testosterone by interstitial cells. Testosterone is the main sex hormone in males and is very essential for the normal development and proper functioning of other organs.
