Question
Chemistry Question on Thermodynamics
The energy currency of the cell is
A
AMP
B
GTP
C
NADPH2
D
ATP
Answer
ATP
Explanation
Solution
ATP (adenosine triphosphate) is a nucleotide that serves as energy currency of cell. It consists of ribose sugar, adenine and three phosphate groups. The covalent bonds present between phosphate groups are high energy bonds which on hydrolysis provide a large amount of energy. ATP being stable molecule, is used for storage of chemical energy released during life processes like respiration. This stored energy is utilised whenever needed by cell by ATP hydrolysis.
