Physics Question on Motion in a straight line

The displacement xx of a body varies with time as x=13t2+16t+2x = -\frac{1}{3} t^2 + 16 t +2 , where xx is in metres and tt is in seconds. The time taken by the body to come to rest is

A

12s12\,s

B

24s24\,s

C

30s30 \,s

D

36s36 \,s

Answer

24s24\,s

Explanation

Solution

Displacement of a body,
x=13t2+16t+3[v=dxdt]x = - \frac{1}{3} t^2 + 16 t + 3 \,\,[\because v = \frac{dx}{dt}]
From the question, v=0v = 0
or ddt(13t2+16t+3)=0\frac{d}{dt}( - \frac{1}{3} t^2 + 16 t + 3) = 0
or 23t+16+0=0 - \frac{2}{3}t + 16 + 0 = 0
or 23t=16-\frac{2}{3}t = - 16
or t=16×32=24s t = \frac{16 \times 3}{2} = 24\,s
So, time taken by the body to come to rest is 24s24 \,s.
