Question

Chemistry Question on Phenols

The correct order of decreasing acidity of nitrophenols will be

A

mm-nitrophenol >p>\, p-nitrophenol >o>\, o-nitrophenol

B

oo-nitrophenol >m>\, m- nitrophenol >p>\, p-nitrophenol

C

pp-nitrophenol >>\, m- nitrophenol >o>\, o-nitrophenol

D

pp-nitrophenol >>\, o-nitrophenol >m>\, m-nitrophenol

Answer

pp-nitrophenol >>\, o-nitrophenol >m>\, m-nitrophenol

Explanation

Solution

NO2- NO _{2} group at o- and pp- position withdraws electrons of the OHO - H bond towards itself by the stronger R-R effect while the NO2- NO _{2} group at mm-position with draws electrons of the OHO - H bcnd by the weaker -I effect. Thus, oo - and pp - nitrophenols are more acidic than mm - nitrophenol. Among oo- and pp nitrophenols, o- nitrophenol is little less acidic than pp-nitrophenol due to intramolecular H-bonding which makes loss of a proton little more difficult.

\therefore The order of acidity of nitrophenols is
pp- nitrophenol > oo- nitrophenol > mm- nitrophenol
