The cause of shining in diamond is
This question has multiple correct options
A. scattering of light
B. refraction of light
C. total internal reflection of light
D. dispersion of light
Solution
The term dispersion itself means spattering or splitting out. White light is an EM wave which is made up of various colored rays with different wavelengths. Now when this light wave is passed into any transparent material time of interaction of individual constituent rays with atoms of that material determines the structure of the light coming out the transparent material.
Complete answer:
When white light is passed through any transparent material, here it is diamond then light gets separated into its individual component colors. This process of separation of light into its individual components is called dispersion of light
normally those colors are called as VIBGYOR where
VIOLET(V)
INDIGO(I)
BLUE(B)
GREEN(G)
YELLOW(Y)
ORANGE(O)
RED(R)
Each color has its own wavelength where violet has the shortest wavelength while red has the longest wavelength
Refractive index of each individual light varies with its wavelength and frequency. For higher frequency refractive index will be more and that color deviates more and lower frequency rays have less refractive index and deviates less.
So as soon as white light enters diamond, it will refract and dispersion occurs. After that as the refractive index of diamond is very high its critical angle will be less and all the dispersed rays will undergo total internal reflection in the diamond.
So all three i.e refraction and dispersion and total internal reflection are responsible for the shining of diamond.
Hence B,C,D are correct options.
Note:
Obviously when we tell there is dispersion then it is clear that the light has undergone refraction. Because without refraction there will be no dispersion. So order wise for diamond, first refraction occurs then dispersion then total internal reflection and this process continues and sometimes light will come out of the diamond.
