A large taxon, mostly treated as distinct order comprising 3 families : papilionaceae (Fabaceae), caesalpiniaceae and mimosaceae. Of all these families papilionaceae is predominantly herbaceous with a few shurbs and trees, but both the caesalpiniaceae and mimosaceae are chiefly arborescent. The flowers in racemose inflorescence, bisexual, actino or zygomorphic are usually highly ornamental. Stamens few to numerous, basifixed, mostly dehisce longitudinally.
