Question
Biology Question on What Are The Evidences For Evolution?
Sweet potato and potato are examples of
A
homologous structure
B
analogous structure
C
Both [a] and [b]
D
None of the above
Answer
analogous structure
Explanation
Solution
Analogous structures are those structures which are different in their basic structure and developmental origin but appear similar and perform similar function. For example sweet potato (Ipomoea batata) is an underground tuberous root and potato (Solanum tuberosum) is an underground stem but both are modification and meant for storage of food. Homologous structures are those structure which have the same embryonic origin and basic structure though they may or may not perform the same functions. For example phyllode or phylloclade of Opuntia; Ruscus and cladode of Asparagus.
