Statement 1: Bakelite is hard and has a high melting point.
Statement 2: Intermolecular forces of attraction in it are H- bonding.
A.Statement 1 is true; statement 2 is true; statement 2 is the correct explanation of statement 1.
B.Statement 1 is true, statement 2 is true; statement 2 is not the correct explanation of statement 1.
C.Statement 1 is true; statement 2 is false.
D.Statement 1 is false; statement 2 is true.
Solution
In 1907 a resin of phenol (C6H5OH) – formaldehyde (HCHO) was invented and was named as Bakelite. It is the hard, infusible and chemically resistant plastic made by the combination of the two main organic chemicals easily available in the laboratory.
Complete step by step answer:
The Field of chemistry is wide and polymer chemistry is one such domain of chemistry which finds extensive applications in the day to day life of the individual. The substance made by the large repeating units of monomers is known as polymer. The monomers joined in the long chain or branch form forms the polymers and this process is known as polymerization.
Resin is the viscous and solid substance usually derived from the plants and are easily convertible into polymers. Bakelite was first synthetically made resin. It was derived from the Phenol and formaldehyde which were obtained from coal tar and wood alcohol. Bakelite has excellent insulating property.
Preparation of the Resin Bakelite: Bakelite can be prepared by heating the Novolac (a linear polymer formed by the polymerization of phenol and formaldehyde) with the formaldehyde molecule which on heating undergoes the polymerisation reaction and forms the cross linked polymer or resin known as Bakelite. This can be easily understood by the below given reaction.
C8H6O2+HCHO→(C6H6O−CH2OH)n
No hydrogen bonding is involved during this polymerization reaction; instead it is the cross linking between the Novolac and Formaldehyde molecule which results in the formation of the Bakelite polymer.
Thus the statement 1 Bakelite is hard and has high melting point is correct but the statement 2 that it has hydrogen bonding as the intermolecular force of attraction in it is incorrect .
So the option C is the correct answer i.e. Statement 1 is true, statement 2 is false.
Note:
Bakelite can be moulded easily and is resistant to heat and electric current thus it finds extensive applications in electrical switches and in the handles of the utensils.
