State two ways in which you can separate a mixture of sand and sugar.
Solution
Sand and sugar are two components that do not react with each other. They can be separated by using the solubility of both the components in water and they can be separated by using the property of difference in their weight.
Complete answer:
In chemistry, we use many types of techniques to separate different components. Two components given in the question are sugar and sand. As we know that they do not react with each other.
So, first, a technique that can be used to separate sand and sugar can be water. Since water is soluble in water but sand is not soluble in water. So, take the mixture of sand and sugar and dissolve it in water, sugar will dissolve in water and the sand will remain undissolved. Now, filter this solution, sand will be separated, and dry the sand. Now take the filtrate and heat until the water evaporates and solid sugar remains. So, we get sand and sugar separately.
Now, the second technique that can be used to separate sand and sugar is Winnowing. Winnowing is the process of using wind or blowing air to distinguish heavy and lighter elements of a mixture. So, sand is lighter than sugar molecules. Therefore, when the wind is blown then sand is separated from sugar molecules.
Note:
Farmers mostly use winnowing, which is a very old technique. Farmers use this method to distinguish the lighter husk particles from the heavier grain seeds.
