Sound waves of wavelength λ\lambdatravelling in a medium with a speed of v m s1s^{- 1} enter into another medium where its speed is 2v m s1s^{- 1} wavelength of sound waves in the second medium is.

A

λ\lambda

B

λ2\frac{\lambda}{2}

C

2λ2\lambda

D

4λ4\lambda

Answer

2λ2\lambda

Explanation

Solution

Wavelength of sound waves in the second Medium

λ=vυ\lambda = \frac{v}{\upsilon} …. (i)

Wavelength of sound waves in the seconds medium

λ=2vυ\lambda' = \frac{2v}{\upsilon'} ….. (ii)

As the frequency of the wave remains unchanged with the change in medium

υ=υ\therefore\upsilon = \upsilon' ...... (iii)

Divide (ii) by (i), we get

λλ=2\frac{\lambda'}{\lambda} = 2 [Using (iii)]

Or λ=2λ\lambda' = 2\lambda
