Question
Biology Question on neural control and coordination
Select the incorrect statement regarding synapses:
The membranes of presynaptic and postsynaptic neurons are in close proximity in an electrical synapse.
Electrical current can flow directly from one neuron into the other across the electrical synapse.
Chemical synapse use neurotransmitters
Impulse transmission across a chemical synapse is always faster than that across an electrical synapse
Impulse transmission across a chemical synapse is always faster than that across an electrical synapse
Solution
A nerve impulse is transmitted from one neuron to another through junctions called synapses. There are two types of synapses, namely, electrical synapses and chemical synapses. Transmission of an impulse across electrical synapses is very similar to impulse conduction along a single axon. Impulse transmission across an electrical synapse is always faster than that across a chemical synapse.
