The following are the details of the breeds of the buffalo.
A) Mehsana: There is a town named Mehsana in northern Gujarat. Mehsana are the breed of the water buffalo from the state of Gujarat, India. These buffalo are widely reared here and counted as one of the best milk breeds in India.
B) Murrah: This breed of buffalo is mainly kept for the milk production in the state of Punjab and Haryana. Scientific name of this breed is: Bubalus bubalis. This is a water buffalo which is generally jet black in colour. The horns of these buffaloes are different from the other breeds. This breed gives on an average of 10 litres per day to 16 litres per day of milk. Murrah buffalo yield ranges in the range of 2500-3600 litres per lactation.
C) Nagpuri: Nagpuri buffalo is a breed of Vidarbha region of Maharashtra. It is also a better quality of water breed buffalo in India these breeds are environment friendly to the rude harsh semi-arid conditions of the region in which it is mainly found. It is river type buffalo. It can carry heavy luggage also.
D) Surti: Surti breed has a source at Charottar tract of Gujrat between the Mahi and Sabarmati rivers. The horn is sickle shaped. It is a breed of water buffalo.
Note: The Murrah breed has long sickle shaped horns parallel to neck and it is known as draught cattle as it is really strong. The mehsana breed of buffalo is mainly formed by crossing the Murrah and the Surti breed and thus it is the best variety of buffalo. The Surti breed of buffalo has a lighter body weight.
