Ranganathittu Sanctuary (Mysore) is known for population of
A. Bison
B. Tiger
C. Goats
D. Birds
Solution
Hint:- The true meaning of Sanctuary refers to a sacred place. In other terms, sanctuary can be defined as a protected area for animals and birds to live their lives safely until natural death arrives. Example - Gir Wildlife Sanctuary, Itanagar Wildlife Sanctuary etc. Sanctuaries are quite different from national parks, though both ensure protection and preservation of the natural ecosystem.
Complete Answer:-
The Ranganathittu sanctuary in Mysore, comprising six small islands, having an area of 40 acres, on the bank of the river Kaveri, is popular for being the largest sanctuary of birds in Karnataka. It is also known as the Pakshi Kashi of Karnataka. It is located in the Mandya district of Karnataka in India.
Approximately 170 species of birds have been observed till date in here such as the painted stork, Asian openbill stork, common spoonbill and woolly-necked stork. During the months of winter, several different species of migratory birds gather in this sanctuary. Other than birds, the islands host multiple faunas that provide the key of attraction for visitors. Bonnet macaque, smooth coated otter, colonies of flying fox, Indian gray mongoose and mugger crocodile or marsh crocodile are few of the inhabitants of this place.
The flora of the islands balance the ecosystem of the place by covering the area with rare as well as known species. Similarly the Sanctuaries for other animals are as follows :
Bison – Bandipur National Park, Karnataka.
Tiger – Kaziranga National Park, Assam.
Goats – Rajamalai National Park, Munnar.
Birds – Ranganathittu Sanctuary, Karnataka.
The correct answer is Option D.
Note:- Sanctuaries were meant to be made to conserve the wildlife ecosystem and endangered species from becoming extinct. Although for the same purpose, innumerable national Parks were also made (Jim Corbett National Park), there are few basic differences between them. National Parks are more restrained than sanctuaries by means of access to common people.
