R.Q. for protein is
A. 1.4
B. 0.5
C. 0.7-0.9
D. Unity
Solution
R.Q is also known as respiratory quotient. Respiration is the process of biological oxidation of organic molecules. This process is done with the help of enzymes. The result of respiration is that it releases the energy in the form of ATP.
Complete answer:
During the process of aerobic respiration , oxygen is consumed and carbon dioxide is released . The ratio of the carbon dioxide that is pulled out to the volume of oxygen consumed during the process of respiration is called the respiratory quotient. It is also called the respiratory ratio.
The respiratory quotient also depends on the type of respiratory substrate that is used during the process of respiration.
1.4 :- this is the RQ value of the malic acid that is an organic acid. The RQ value of organic acid is usually more than the unity because organic acids contain high amounts of oxygen and low amounts of carbon and hydrogen. So less oxygen is absorbed and more carbon dioxide is liberated.
0.5 :- when the respiratory substrate is fat the value of respiratory quotient is less than 1. This Is due to the fact that more oxygen is absorbed and less carbon dioxide is released. When it is calculated for tripalmitin the value comes to be less than 1.
0.7 – 0.9 :- when respiratory substrate is protein the value of respiratory quotient is 0.9 mostly.
This Is due to the fact that more oxygen is absorbed and less carbon dioxide is released. When it is calculated for tripalmitin the value comes 0.9.
Unity :- when carbohydrates are used as substrate and when they are completely oxidised the respiratory quotient will be 1. It is due to fact equal amounts of carbon dioxide and oxygen are evolved and consumed respectively.
Our required option is c) that is 0.7 – 0.9
Note: When anaerobic respiration is performed the value of the respiratory quotient comes out to be infinity . This is due to the fact that no amount of oxygen is absorbed in this respiration so the ratio of carbon dioxide to that of oxygen will come out to be infinity.
