Purkinje coined the term protoplasm in which year?
A. 1739
B. 1839
C. 1779
D. 1879

Explanation

Solution

Protoplasm is the living material of the cell which includes organelles, cytoplasm (liquid inside the cell), nucleus and other content of the cell. Anything inside the plasma membrane is called a protoplasm. This term was firstly introduced by J. E. Purkinje.

Complete answer:
Johann Evangelist Purkinje was an anatomist and physiologist. He was born on 18 December 1787 in Austrian Monarchy. He graduated from Charles University in Prague in 1818, with a degree in medicine, after which he joined as professor of physiology. He died on 28 july 1869 at the age of 81 years.
He discovered the Purkinje effect in which he talked about the effect of intensity of light on the human eye and said that the human eye has less sensitivity to dim red light as compared to dim blue light. He was the first person to use a microtome in the field of microscopy to make thin slices of the sample to be observed under the compound microscope.
Thus, we can conclude that Purkinje introduced the term protoplast in 1939. He firstly observed in 1835 that living animal cells contain some juice, then after performing required experiments, he confirmed the fact of presence of protoplasm and then he published the work in 1839.

Thus, option ‘B’ is the correct option for the answer.

Note:
He also coined the term plasma for the blood when all the cells are extracted from the blood, the liquid which is left over is known as plasma which is used for the treatment for many diseases and many cell therapies.
