Question: Pollination refers to the…………………...

Pollination refers to the…………………

Explanation

Solution

Pollination is an important process which is important for reproduction in plants. It leads to the product which is edible by animals and human beings. Pollination is brought about by self or by the agents like wind water.

Complete answer:
Pollination is an important process of the transfer of male gametes to the female reproductive part. The male gametes are the pollen grains which is present in the anther. The female reproductive part includes the stigma, style, ovary. The ovary consists of the female reproductive cells. For fertilisation, the male gametes have to fuse with the female gametes. The fusion is brought down by the process of pollination. Pollination is the transfer of pollen grains from the anther to the stigma which leads to fertilisation and formation of seed. The transfer can be in the same flower, to the flower present in the same plant or to the flower present on another plant.

Pollination is of two types-
i) Self-pollination- In this type, the flower is bisexual and contains both male and female reproductive parts. The anther bust open to produce pollens and gets transferred to the stigma of the same flower.
ii) Cross-pollination- In this, the pollen is transferred from the anther of one flower to the stigma of another flower. Cross pollination is mediated by several agents like wind, water, animals, birds, insects etc.

By the above discussion we can conclude that pollination refers to the transfer of pollen grans from anther to stigma.

Note: Bee is an important agent for bringing out cross-pollination. It sits from flower to flower bringing about pollination. The fertilisation will only take place when the anther of the flower is transferred to the stigma of the flower of the same kind.
