Question
Chemistry Question on Polarity of bonds
Polar stratospheric clouds facilitate the formation of:
A
CIONO2
B
HOCL
C
CIO
D
CH4
Answer
HOCL
Explanation
Solution
In summer season nitrogen dioxide and methane react with chlorine monoxide and chlorine atoms forming, Chlorine sinks, preventing much ozone depletion, whereas in winter, special types of clouds called polar stratospheric clouds are formed over Antarctica. These polar stratospheric clouds provide surface on which chlorine nitrate formed gets hydrolysed to form hypochlorous acid.
CIO(g)+NO2(g)→CIONO2(g)
ClONO2(g)+H2O(g)→HOCl(g)+HNO3(g)
