Question
Biology Question on Photosynthesis in higher plants
Photorespiration is a wasteful process. In photorespiratory pathway, there is no synthesis of sugars orATP.
If both assertion and reason are true and reason is the correct explanation of assertion
If both assertion and reason are true but reason is not the correct explanation of assertion
If assertion is true but reason is false
If both assertion and reason are false
If both assertion and reason are true and reason is the correct explanation of assertion
Solution
Photorespiration is the light dependent process of oxygenation of ribulose biphosphate (RuBP) and release of carbon dioxide by the photosynthetic organs of a plant. In the photorespiratory pathway, there is neither synthesis of sugars nor of ATP. Rather, it results in the release of CO2 with the utilisation of ATP. Therefore, photorespiration is a wasteful process.
