Question
Biology Question on biological classification
One of the following is not the characteristic feature of cyanobacteria.
A
They are multicellular
B
They form colonies
C
They form blooms in polluted water bodies
D
They can fix atmospheric nitrogen
Answer
They are multicellular
Explanation
Solution
Cyanobacteria is a phylum consisting of two groups of photosynthetic eubacteria (Cyanophyta or Chloroxybacteria). They are unicellular but sometimes become joined in colonies or filaments by a sheath of mucilage. They occur in all aquatic habitats. A few species fix atmospheric nitrogen and thus, contribute to soil fertility. In eutrophic warm ponds and lakes, certain cyanobacteria can reproduce rapidly to form blooms.
