Question
Biology Question on plant growth and development
One hormone is used to speed up the malting process in barley, another is used to promote flowering in pineapple, while the third helps in the delay of leaf senescence. These are respectively
Auxin, Gibberellin and Cytokinin
Gibberellin, Cytokinin and Auxin
Gibberellin, Auxin and Cytokinin
Cytokinin, Auxin and Gibberellin
Gibberellin, Auxin and Cytokinin
Solution
Malting is essential for preparation of beer etc. It involves soaking of seeds to initiate germination and then drying them after some time to prevent further germination. As gibberellins induce seed germination of light sensitive seeds like barley even in complete darkness, they are thus used to enhance malting in barley. Auxins generally inhibit the flowering but in pineapple spraying of certain auxins initiates uniform flowering in the whole crop. Senescence of leaves results in their decolouration, protein degradation and shedding from plants. Cytokinins delay leaf senescence (Richmond-Lang effect).
