On heating ozone , its volume ?
a.) Decreases to half
b.) Becomes double
c.) Increases 23 times
d.) Remains unchanged
Solution
Start by the reaction of ozone getting heated up , write the products obtained while balancing the equation. After this, find out the number of moles produced and use the principle of atom conservation (POAC) to find out the total volume generated when we take 1 litre volume of ozone, Sum of the volume of products is the final volume produced. Compare with the reactant volume.
Complete step by step answer:
Let us see what do we get when we heat ozone gas
O3ΔO2+[O]
So , we get an oxygen(diatomic) molecule, a stable molecule and a nascent oxygen(monoatomic) , which is highly reactive and unstable .
So , according to the reaction we have 1 mole of ozone giving up 1 mole of oxygen molecule and 1 mole of nascent oxygen.
Now, if we take the volume of ozone to be 1 litre then it gives 1 litre of oxygen molecule , but gives only 0.5 litre of nascent oxygen as it is half of oxygen molecule.
So, the total amount of volume produced is 1.5 litres from 1 litre.
Therefore , the volume increases to 1.5 times.
So, the correct answer is “Option C”.
Note: The above mentioned reaction is very important and is frequently asked in many exams. Students must remember all the chemical laws of combination which are used in chemistry , as they are the base of all the subsequent knowledge.
