On heating a mixture of NH4Cl and KNO2 we get:
A.NH4NO3
B.KNH4(NO3)2
C.N2
D.NO
Solution
Chemical reaction is a method or we can say process to convert substances into different products. The substances which are converted are known as reactants and the resultant substances obtained after reaction are known as products and this whole process is known as chemical reaction.
Complete step by step answer:
The heating of mixture of NH4Cl and KNO2 is an example of chemical reaction. NH4Cl and KNO2are reactants which are mixed together in presence of heat.
NH4Cl is known as ammonium chloride and KNO2 is known as potassium nitrite.
The reaction in which heating a mixture of NH4Cl and KNO2 is done is as following:
NH4Cl + KNO2→N2 + KCl + H2O
The products obtained in this reaction are nitrogen gas, potassium chloride and two moles of water.
In NH4Cl the oxidation state of nitrogen is −3 and in molecule KNO2 the oxidation state of nitrogen is +3 and the oxidation state of nitrogen of N2 is 0 .
So we can say that NH4Cl acts as a reducing agent while KNO2 acts as an oxidising agent. Hence the overall produced gas nitrogen has nitrogen atoms with the oxidation states as zero.
The ammonium chloride and potassium nitrite together forms a saturated solution which reacts with each other when the solution is boiled.
This reaction (heating a mixture of NH4Cl and KNO2 ) is used to produce a super stable nitrogen gas which is used for industrial purposes such as packaging.
Note:
NH4Cl is an explosive substance. It reacts violently with the oxidizing agents and produces corrosive gaseous vapours of ammonia and some nitrous vapours also. Ammonium chloride is a dangerous chemical substance which creates human health problems such as cough, headache etc. if exposed openly.
