When $o$ -toluic acid is treated with $Br _{2} / Fe$ , electrophilic substitution take place. - $CH _{3}$ group is $o$ -and - $p$ directing, while $- COOH$ is $m$ -directing. Hence, $5$ -bromo- $2$ -methyl benzoic acid is obtained.
