Question
Question: Name the red pigment which carries oxygen in blood....
Name the red pigment which carries oxygen in blood.
Solution
The red colour fluid present in our body is known as blood. Blood is found in almost every organism which has a circulatory system.
Complete answer:
Let us first know more about blood, before we find the answer. Blood is an example of fluid connective tissue which contains blood cells, plasma and platelets. On an average in an adult, almost 5-6 litres of blood is found.
The blood has various types of cells-
Red blood cells or erythrocytes
White blood cells or leukocytes
Platelets or thrombocytes
The RBCs have a red coloured pigment known as haemoglobin. Haemoglobin is a protein which is rich in iron and is also responsible for carrying oxygen in blood. It helps in transferring oxygen from blood to the tissues from lungs.
Additional information: The function of various types of cells found in blood are,
Red blood cells or erythrocytes - They help in transporting oxygen from lungs to tissues and also help in removing waste by carrying carbon dioxide from tissues to lungs
White blood cells or leukocytes - They help in fighting against an infection and thereby protecting the body
Platelets or thrombocytes - They help in blood clotting and come in action when there is a haemorrhage or bleeding
Notes: It is to be noted that haemoglobin has 210 times higher affinity towards carbon monoxide than oxygen, therefore, in presence of carbon monoxide, haemoglobin will bind to it and not oxygen. This leads to low levels of oxygen in the blood.
