The eye has a rounded shape. The outer coating of the eye is dark. It's hard to shield the inside of the eye from injuries. Its translucent front component is known as cornea (Fig. 16.14). Below the cornea is a dark muscle layer called iris. There is a small hole in the iris called the pupil. The size of the student is regulated by the iris. The iris is the part of the eye that gives it its distinctive hue. When we say that a person has green eyes, we simply apply to the colour of the iris. The iris controls the amount of light entering the eye. Below the eye pupil is the lens. The lens directs light on the back of the eye, on a membrane called the retina. The retina comprises a variety of nerve cells. Sensations of the nerve cells are then transferred to the brain via the optic nerve, which is thicker in the centre.

It is situated in the periphery of the optic nerve. It acts like a film in a camera. The light rays come to the retina of the regular eye.
