Name different types of teeth and their number in an adult human.

Explanation

Solution

Teeth are the pointed structures present in the mouth that are used to chew, bite, cut, and masticate the food. They help in the initial digestion of the food and simplify it for further digestion.

Complete answer: The number, kinds, arrangement, and structure of teeth are known as dentition. The teeth are ecto mesodermal in origin. Teeth have a very less organic part, therefore their demineralization is difficult. They are made up of ninety to ninety-five percent of calcium carbonate and calcium phosphate.
The teeth are made up of two main structures namely the enamel and the dentine. The enamel is the hardest layer of the body. it is the outer structure of the teeth that is present above the gums and is visible outside. They are white in color and made up of neuroblast cells. The dentine is the main, yellow, soft, and the inner part of the teeth. They are mesodermal in origin and they are made up of odontoblast cells.
An adult human being has four different types of teeth. These are as follows –
Incisor – They are eight in number. They are the front flat teeth. They are used for cutting the food.
Canine – They are four in number. They are the pointed teeth. Canines are present adjacent to the incisors. They are used for tearing the food.
Premolars – They are eight in number. They are the bi-cusped teeth. Premolars are present adjacent to the canines. They are used to chewing the food.
Molars – They are twelve in number. They are the tri-cusped teeth. Molars are present adjacent to the premolars. They are used for grinding the food.

Note: A typical tooth has three parts. These three parts are –
Root – They have a bony socket called the alveolus.
Neck – They have a pulp cavity with blood and nerve supplies. It is fixed with the gum by the periodontal ligament.
Crown – It consists of enamel and dentine.
