In human beings, the male and female reproductive system is a complex structure which produces gametes and also hormones which support the reproductive system. The female reproductive system comprises external and internal parts which altogether function in fertilisation and development of off-spring.

In human reproduction, the fertilisation and development of embryo and foetus takes place inside the body of a female. So, the female reproductive system plays a major role in childbirth.
The external reproductive parts consist of clitoris, labia majora and minora. They protect the internal parts from microbial invasion.
The Internal parts comprises of vagina which receives penis during intercourse and the three important parts called the ovary, fallopian tube and the uterus.
Ovary- It is the most important part of the female reproductive system. It is present in pairs.
The main function of ovary is to produce eggs and also produce hormones like oestrogen and progesterone. These hormones help in developing sexual characters and also facilitate childbirth.
Fallopian tube- It is a tube-like structure which is present on either side of the uterus. It connects the ovary with the uterus. The function of the fallopian tube is the sperm and the ovum fertilized in the fallopian tube. The walls of the tube are made up of cilia which help in the movement of fertilised egg to the uterus.
Uterus- It is the main reproductive part where the foetus develops. It is elastic and pear shaped. The fertilised egg implants on the wall of the uterus. The lining of the uterus supports the growing embryo and nourishes it for the whole gestation.
Note: The uterus and the ovary produce hormones which support the growing embryo. It also secretes a hormone called the prolactin which stimulates the mammary gland for the production of milk. The ovary and uterus is directed by the pituitary which produces gonadotropic hormones.
