Science Question on Life Processes
Name a plant growth hormone synthesized at the shoot tip. Explain its effect on the growth of a plant in response to light.
Answer
The plant growth hormone synthesized at the shoot tip is Auxin.
Effect on plant growth in response to light:
• Auxin is responsible for the phenomenon of phototropism (growth of a plant in responseto light).
• When light falls on one side of the shoot tip, auxins accumulate on the shaded side ofthe shoot.
• This results in faster cell elongation on the shaded side compared to the illuminated side, causing the shoot to bend towards the light.
