Mr. Roy, the principal of one reputed school organized a seminar in which he invited parents and principal to discuss the serious issue of diabetes and depression in students. They all resolved this issue by strictly banning the junk food in school and to introduce healthy snacks and drinks like soup, lassi, milk etc in school canteens. They also decided to make compulsory half an hour physical activities for the students in the morning assembly daily. After six months, Mr Roy conducted the health survey in most of the schools and discovered a tremendous improvement in the health of students.
After reading the above passage, answer the following:
i) What are the values displayed by Mr. Roy?
ii) As a student, how can you spread awareness about this issue?
iii) What are tranquilizers? Give an example.
iv) Why is use of aspartame limited to cold foods and drinks?

Explanation

Solution

We know that the intake of junk food causes stress and fatigue in the body. It is known that if the level of noradrenaline in the body is low for some reasons then the message transfer process becomes slow. This also in the body happens due to the unhealthy eating habits.

Complete step by step answer:
i. We can say that Mr. Roy expressed concern about the healthcare and well-being of the students.
ii. We can spread awareness about the issue of diabetes and depression as a student by making posters which state the demerits of junk food and merits of eating healthy snacks and drinks. We can put all these kinds of posters within the school premises. Also we can ask the canteen owner to put only the healthy snacks and drinks in the canteen so that the chance of eating unhealthy food decreases.
iii. We know that tranquilizers are neurologically active drugs. They are used for the treatment of stress, fatigue, mild and severe mental diseases. The examples of tranquilizers are Chlordiazepoxide and meprobamate, we can say that these are mild tranquilisers.
iv. We know that aspartame is one of the successful artificial sweeteners. It is the methyl ester of the dipeptide derived from phenylalanine and aspartic acid. It is roughly 100 times as sweet as sucrose. It gets decomposed at baking or cooking temperatures and due to this reason it is used only in cold foods and drinks. It causes phenylketonuria, therefore it is not used because its metabolism causes the conversion of aspartame to phenylpyruvic acid. We can also say that the accumulation of phenylpyruvic acid is harmful for infants due to brain damage and mental retardation.

Note: We know that the antidepressant drugs are used to inhibit enzymes which are responsible for causing the degradation of noradrenaline. We also know that artificial sweeteners are not good for health as they are responsible for many diseases. They just improve the taste and appearance of the food.
