Question
Question: Monds process is used for the purification of ____________....
Monds process is used for the purification of ____________.
Solution
The Mond’s process, occasionally called as the carbonyl process. This is a technique proposed by Ludwig Mond in 1890. This process was used commercially before the end of the 19th century. In Mond's process, Carbon monoxide (CO) is used to remove the impurities from the metals.
Complete step by step solution:
-Using Mond's process, the pure form of Nickel can be prepared from oxides of nickel.
-Mond's process converts nickel oxides into nickel metal with very high purity in just a single process.
-Purification of the Nickel from oxides of the nickel through Mond's process contains three steps.
-First step:
-In the first step Nickel oxide (NiO) reacts with hydrogen at 200 0Cand gives nickel, together with impurities like iron and cobalt.
NiO+H2Ni+H2O
-Second step:
The nickel with impurities formed in first step reacts with carbon monoxide (CO) at 50–60 0Cand forms the gas nickel carbonyl (Ni(CO)4, leaving the impurities as solids.
Ni+4CONi(CO)4
-Third step:
The mixture of nickel carbonyl formed in the second step and hydrogen gas is heated to 220–2500C and results in the formation of pure nickel (Ni) and carbon monoxide (CO).
Ni(CO)4+H2Ni+4CO
So, Monds process is used to purify the Nickel-metal from oxides of Nickel.
Note: Don’t be confused with the names Mond's process and Carbonyl process. Both the names are the same. By using carbonyl in Mond's process nickel metal is going to purify. So, the name Monds process is also called a carbonyl process.
