Question

Physics Question on Current electricity

ln a Wheatstone's bridge all the four arms have equal resistance RR. If the resistance of the galvanometer arm is also RR, the equivalent resistance of the combination as seen by the battery is

A

RR

B

2R2R

C

R4\frac{R}{4}

D

R2\frac{R}{2}

Answer

RR

Explanation

Solution

The balanced condition of Wheatstone's bridge is
RABRBC=RADRDC\frac{R_{A B}}{R_{B C}}=\frac{R_{A D}}{R_{D C}}
As bridge is in balanced condition, no current will flow through BDB D.

R1=RAB+RBCR_{1} =R_{A B}+R_{B C}
=R+R=2R=R+R=2 R
R2=RAD+RCD=R+R=2RR_{2} =R_{A D}+R_{C D}=R+R=2 R
Also, R1R_{1} and R2R_{2} are in parallel combination.
Hence, equivalent resistance between AA and CC will be
Req=R1R2R1+R2=4R24R=R\therefore R_{ eq }=\frac{R_{1} R_{2}}{R_{1}+R_{2}}=\frac{4 R^{2}}{4 R}=R
